Chapter 10

Around midnight Luca and his men arrived at the designated meeting location. Blaze hired a private jet to transport the team to reduce the likelihood of Madame Mercado being alerted by their arrival, although Blaze was certain she had people watching Nando around the clock. Nando still wasn’t certain that the Mercado clan took Neve, but that was the most likely explanation. He had no known enemies except for the Mercados. Neve was sweetheart who got along with everyone, except her ex-boyfriend, as well as her former college roommate.

Luca had spent a lot of time in Champaign helping Nando get settled years ago. What Nando discovered however, was that Luca had been there for his protection and not so much to set up business. Blaze had to make sure that the place was safe enough or he’d never have allowed Nando to stay. In this instance, Nando had expected to meet with Luca at his office or one of his storage units, but the man had different ideas.

The location was in Danville, thirty-five minutes away from Champaign in a red brick four story loft. One of the first things Blaze advised Nando to do was to get burner phones to communicate with the men. But since Ciara was there during this conversation, she insisted on joining the ‘team’ as well. Against his better judgment, and because he didn’t want her going out and getting into trouble, he agreed that she could tag along just this once. Moreover, he wasn’t sure what was going on, and needed to keep her safe.

“Just stick by me and stay quiet,” Nando advised Ciara.

“Yes Boss.”

“As of tomorrow, I’ll get one of the men to stay with you until we figure out what’s going on.”

Rolling her eyes, she scoffed. “Is that why you agreed to let me come with you, because you think I can’t take care of myself?”

“Yes.”

“Screw you Nando,” she spat. “You’re not leaving me out of this mission. I’m no damn damsel in distress. I want a piece of this action.”

“Have you ever dealt with a situation like this before?”

She turned to look at his profile as he pulled up to the building the men were waiting in. “Have you?”

“Not exactly. But I’m a …”

“A man. Is that what you were about to say?” she grilled. “I never took you for a sexist.”

He turned to look at her. “You know me better than that.”

“Then allow me to prove to you, just like any man on your team, that I can do this. Neve is not just a friend, Nando, she’s my sister.”

“I know.”

“I will work with you on this and we’ll have each other’s backs.”

“Alright, I suppose you can be a part of the team. But you have to take orders from Luca or myself.”

“Aye-aye, Captain.”

After the conversation, with Nando still having doubts about Ciara, they exited the vehicle. The area was dimly lit, but they could make out three SUVs parked at the side of the building along with several motorbikes. Ciara strolled over to one of the parked motorcycles and ran a hand over the leather wrapped seat.
